Early Marriage?

.. is the marriage of children and adolescents below the age of 18.
The "practice of marrying girls at a young age is common in South Asia".
There are specific parts of South Asia where marriages before puberty are not unusual. However, the Centre also notes that marriage shortly after puberty is common among those living traditional lifestyles in the Middle East, North Africa and other parts of Asia. Marriages of female adolescents between sixteen and eighteen are common in parts of Latin America and Eastern Europe.

Side Story
Child Sex Tourism

... is the commercial sexual exploitation of children by persons who travel from their own country to another usually less developed country to engage in sexual acts with children.
Child sex tourists come from all walks of life: they may be married or single, male or female, wealthy tourists or budget travellers. They may be paedophiles travelling specifically to exploit children or travellers who do not plan their trip with the intention of abusing a child.

ImageWe have found two more schools where the personnel are committed to providing basic schooling for children from rural backgrounds. They are situated in the Homale municipality, about ten kilometres from Battambang.
We have planned to support all the pupils of these schools, from the beginning of the trimester. There is a total of 89 pupils in one scool and 503 in the other one. We will provide them all with what we call our “school survival kits”, with contain the most necessary material needed to study successfully, notably: 5 note books, 3 ballpoint pens, 2 erasers and some pencils, as well as a uniform with the AVEC logo.

ImageAs a matter of fact, several unforeseen visits have convinced us that a majority of the pupils possess neither pencils nor a note book worth the name. For the sake of the quality and the continuity of the pupils’ school work, it is important to provide them with adequate material. This might seem clear and very basic, in a European context, but here, people make do with what they have. Since most of the classes are overpopulated, containing up to 50 pupils per class, we hope that our help will permit the teacher to finally put each and every child to work. Moreover, we provide the teachers with a stock of material so that they themselves can build and steer the schools’ resource banks. This material will be kept under locks, to avoid bad surprises during the school year.

One of the schools seems to have a chronic problem with pupils being absent. We will concentrate on remedying this, using all the experience we have gathered from our work in Dâksoso.

ImageWe are looking for a company that would be prepared to take up the expenses for our October project. That will not represent an enormous investment, and we are at your disposition for communicating the sum that will be needed for the operation.
