A teacher rather than a pimp
A teacher rather than a pimp
From the 1 October 2006, AVEC will have 752 children to support. We have found two more schools where the personnel are committed to providing basic schooling for children from rural backgrounds. They are situated in the Homale municipality, about ten kilometres from Battambang.
We have planned to support all the pupils of these schools, from the beginning of the trimester. There is a total of 89 pupils in one scool and 503 in the other one. We will provide them all with what we call our “school survival kits”, with contain the most necessary material needed to study successfully, notably: 5 note books, 3 ballpoint pens, 2 erasers and some pencils, as well as a uniform with the AVEC logo.

Side Story
Achieve universal primary education

Target by 2005 : Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education.

While most of the Millennium Development Goals face a deadline of 2015, the gender parity target was set to be achieved a full ten years earlier - an acknowledgement that equal access to education is the foundation for all other development goals. Yet recent statistics show that for every 100 boys out of school, there are still 117 girls in the same situation. Until equal numbers of girls and boys are in school, it will be impossible to build the knowledge necessary to eradicate poverty and hunger, combat disease and ensure environmental sustainability. And millions of children and women will continue to die needlessly, placing the rest of the development agenda at risk.

ImageSala Balat is a very big school, which counts no less than 480 pupils. All of them are not as poor as in Dâksoso, but this will allow us to create a special bond with the headmistress of the school, and to work closely with the poorer children of the school who don’t attend school on a regular basis. Furthermore, we’ll look for children whose family‘s situation are very critical. We could then work in partnership with the teachers to facilitate the integration of those children in the school.

ImageMany of the children here are more active than the children in Dâksoso; they shout, they sing, and act very responsively when they receive their school survival kits. This school has the great opportunity of having a library which contains a lot of educational children’s books. Several of the classrooms are filled with children’s drawings and also some made by the teachers. Sala Balat has the chance of having a very dynamic lady as its headmistress, and she understood from the beginning the goals of our work. She will surely be a precious ally in our fight against the trafficking in children and for bringing all children basic education.

ImageNot only did we give school survival kits to all the children, but we also provided many whiteboards for the classrooms and stationary for the school stock, as well as some twenty books for the library. There are some orphans in the school and kids with problems far too heavy for them to deal with, but now that we are well established in the school, we will be able to help them. This schooling day has gone beyond our expectations; it was a real success and the happiness of those 480 pupils is still resonating in my mind. I would like to congratulate all the 13 volunteers from AVEC who have worked extremely hard and unselfishly to make this day a great success.
