After the schooling days in November, we decided to relaunch our work with the two new schools in the Homale municipality. One of them has a real absence problem among the pupils, but also among the teachers. We’re hence again in the process of revitalising interest in a school. We had equipped the school with new whiteboards for the class rooms, but also distributed “school survival kits” to all of the children. Then, we started to renovate the WCs, because they were in a terrible state. The work was terminated precisely on December 24.
Our impression is that this school will be even harder work than the other two, because in Daksoso, the staff is more dynamic and enthusiastic. But the importance lies not only with the school but also in the work that we are going to carry out around the schooling. We will start by setting up a list of the poorest children in the neighbourhood who do not attend school regularly and of the children who do not go to school at all, focusing especially on the girls, who are more vulnerable to trafficking.
Then we’ll meet with the parents or guardians of those children and build a relationship of confidence with them. We’ll talk about tomorrow with people who only live from day to day, and who often don’t even know what they’ll find to eat tomorrow.
This will be a huge task for our little team which will search the rice fields for children and families who are in a situation where survival is not evident. We are for the first time going to use satellite pictures as a complement to help locate the families who live isolated and outside the villages.
